GFJ: Susie’s Got A Gun…

Yesterday I wielded a Remington 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun for the first time and I EFFING LOVED IT… I didn’t pull a Cheney and accidentally shoot anyone nor did I hit any of the bright orange thingies that came flying out but, again, I LOVED IT.. And yes, I was dead upset when LA, who, like me, shot for the first time yesterday and hit two orange thingies back-to-back but whatever, practice makes perfect and I fully intend on practicing… I have a new hobby… Yipee…

But I’m jumping ahead of myself…let me rewind… Last week I posted that I took advantage of my “Marathon Sunday” buzz and rudely asked GI Joe to take me shooting in Darien, CT. Being the kind friend that he is, he obliged and we put “Sunday shooting” on the calendar.

So yesterday morning I woke up in Greenwich, put on my dark jeans, blue and white striped J.Crew button down, Camel Cableknit sweater and chocolate brown boots, tied an Hermes scarf around my neck and slapped on a Barbour and off shooting I went.. (Okay, we had brunch at Gingerman first but you catch my drift).

With me at the range were: GI Joe (a former-Marine), CHS (a man with the softest hands on Earth. They make me jealous…He also has mad shooting skills), LA (who, like me, had never shot anything in her life) and Nacho (who went shooting with Lexo the previous weekend). If LA weren’t there with me I’m pretty sure I would’ve backed out.

You see, I don’t do well in circumstances out of my comfort-zone, such as my Squaw Ski Trip last March. I like to be in control, know exactly what to expect and do well (which is funny cause my sister said yesterday that I’m not competitive but as Kelly can attest, I am… it just depends on the situation).

As I had never held a gun before, I was entirely out of said “comfort zone” and was very nervous… But I put my fear aside, listened to GI Joe and our shoot instructor, Bruce’s lessons and felt a little better about it all. Again, I didn’t hit one damn thing and probably would’ve been more upset if it weren’t for the fact that Bruce and GI Joe were so encouraging….

So yesterday I accomplished three things:
1. I stepped outside my comfort zone.
2. I tried something new.
3. I crossed off an item on my bucket list.

Sunday was a good day! Thank you, GI Joe for making the above happen.. Thank you, Bullanah for the fireside drinks apres….and Thank you, Nacho, for saving me from the Metro-North and driving us back to the city.

Btw: Bullanah was golfing whilst we were shooting but popped over towards the end of our session… That beast didn’t even need to warm-up. She hit that orange thingy straight away..
